When you work in entertainment marketing, every now and then, a project lands on your desk that feels like a career milestone. For me, that project was editing the social spots for none other than Pedro Almodóvar’s latest masterpiece, The Room Next Door.

As an admirer of Almodóvar’s iconic filmography—his bold colors, his sweeping emotions, his unparalleled storytelling—it’s a privilege to play even a small role in bringing his vision to audiences. And this film is a special one: his first full-length English-language feature.

The Room Next Door has already made waves, earning an 18-minute standing ovation at Cannes and clinching the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics entrusted us with creating the AV social campaign, including 11 different spots, ranging from general promotion to FYC (For Your Consideration) materials for awards season. With Oscar buzz swirling for stars Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, and John Turturro—not to mention longtime collaborator Alberto Iglesias’ stunning score—it’s shaping up to be a heavyweight contender.

Letting Almodóvar’s Vision Shine

Our creative direction for the campaign was simple yet profound: let the film speak for itself. Almodóvar’s work doesn’t need flashy gimmicks or over-the-top edits. The elegance is already there—in the performances, the cinematography, and, of course, the music. By embracing his signature style and letting moments breathe, we created pieces that honored the film’s natural rhythm and emotional power.

We used only minimal copy, allowing glowing critic reviews to weave their way in. And the score by Iglesias? That was non-negotiable. His compositions elevate every frame, and we made sure they played a starring role in the campaign.

A Campaign to Remember

Beyond the general spots, the FYC pieces were particularly exciting to craft. These highlighted the film’s frontrunner status in key award categories, including Best Actress (Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton), Best Supporting Actor (John Turturro), and Best Original Score (Alberto Iglesias). Could this be the year Almodóvar breaks through Oscar’s “language ceiling”? It certainly feels like it.

Gratitude and Reflection

Projects like these don’t happen in a vacuum, and I’m endlessly grateful to the team that made it possible. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible clients at Sony Pictures Classics, Lauren Weiner, Michael Now, and Carmelo Pirrone, for their guidance and trust. And to Matthew Goldman, thank you for giving me the opportunity to step beyond editing into producing—a challenge I embraced with excitement.

Pedro Almodóvar has shaped global cinema for over four decades, and being a tiny part of his latest journey feels like a dream.

Don’t Miss It

The Room Next Door hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 20, with a limited U.S. release on Christmas Day and a nationwide expansion in January 2025. Do yourself a favor and experience this stunning, deeply moving film—it’s a masterpiece you won’t forget.

Here’s to more stories that transcend language, borders, and boundaries.
